Q: Tell us about yourself and your family.
Married? Children? How many?
Married to Morgan - an utterly brilliant computer programmer, daddy, friend, and hubby. I have two children - Hayley, 9 years and Ruby, 3 months. Hayley is amazing - everything
I wanted for myself, I see in her and it is so beautiful.
Long legs, sweet disposition, gentle heart, social butterfly -
my little tender heart bear. Ruby - well, Ruby is
nothing like Hayley, but just as wonderful. She sleeps,
she is content - gurgling and chuckling and observing.
Q: If you have children, what is your favorite part
about being a mom?
When Ruby crooks her head in an impossible angle and looks up
at me. When Hayley says "You're the best mom" and it
isn't immediately following the purchase of the latest My
Little Pony. When they go to sleep - and their eyelids
have that waxy, translucent, peaceful look that completely
belies the day we just had.
Q: Cat or dog person? Why?
In theory, I prefer cats to dogs, but am terribly allergic.
We have a funny little Chihuahua mix that we rescued from the
Humane Society a few years ago. His name is Loki, for
the Norse god of mischief. It suits him.
Q: Favorite color? Least
favorite? Any particular reason?
I like colors that sound like food.
Cafe au laite, aubergine, chocolate,
raspberry, tangerine, lime, merlot ...
Q: What type of music do you prefer?
I was a bit of a punk in high school - not a vicious, scary
punk - more of a floaty, artsy, white-haired punk. I love
the Cocteau Twins, Belle & Sebastian, Elliot Smith, Kate Bush
... Brit Pop, Indie Pop, not the typical mom-fare. Hayley
loves country - go figure!
Q: Last book that you read - or tried to read?
I have to think about this one. I haven't had a lot of
time to read lately. "Under the Tuscan Sun" - but that
has probably been a year or two ... "How to Be Good" - Nick
Hornby ... "The Long Winter - Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Q: What do you prefer to do in your spare time?
Hobbies/Interests?
Spare time? What's that? I love working on our
house - Home Depot is my friend! Painting the house
deep, deep colors. Redecorating. Vintage clothes -
love vintage clothes! Contemplating our flower beds.
I say contemplating because I have yet to do anything really
amazing. We bought an older house from an estate and the
woman who lived here planted roses everywhere. We are
still trying to figure out all the different flowers and such.
Guilty pleasure? I love ER and Judging Amy and Trading
Places and Changing Rooms and Ewan McGregor. Nursing
baby lends itself to watching a bit too much tele on occasion.
I am also re-discovering hand dyeing - in the form of diapers
... fun!
Q: Funniest WAHM moment.
I must have no sense of humor! I would
say that some of my mistakes are funny -
like the very nice woman who ordered small
Joey Bunz that I had in stock, but oops!,
maybe I didn't, so I apologize and order
them and then ship her the mediums that were
on the shelf all along.
Q: What was the inspiration behind your business?
Inspiration? The first thing that comes to mind is Ruby's
bum - but beyond that, I have always been a bit of an
entrepreneur and I love the internet. Add in equal
portions and stir gently.
Q: How long have you been in business? Is your
business all online or do you have any local business?
I have been in business since October 2003. My business
started primarily online, but I am growing locally and that is
really exciting. I live in a small, relatively isolated
community. I had a gal over for coffee and diapers the
other day and I was showing her my stock items and then I had
to bring out all the others - the Firefly Diapers and SOS and
Sugar Peas. She had the spark of a real hyena!
Q: How did you go about starting your business?
What was the VERY FIRST thing you did?
The VERY FIRST thing I did was talk to my hubby about it.
He thought I was a bit off my rocker - he didn't yet fully
appreciate the seduction that is a great cloth diaper.
He's clued in now and thinks it is fabulous. After that,
like any business - research, research, research ...
Q: What did others think when you started your business?
Were they supportive?
My sister was crazy. She loves the diapers too and is now
a fully converted cloth diapering mama. My mother doesn't
understand how spending $50 on a diaper can save money.
Um, yea.
Q: Do you have a business plan or flying by the seat
of your pants?
I have a bit of a plan - and it is firmly attached to the seat
of my pants.
Q: What is your daily routine?
6:00 am - get hubby off to work and Hayley off to school, then
I run around picking up towels that seem to have legs and wind
up everywhere except the bathroom, feed Ruby, check e-mail,
check voice mail, put Ruby down for morning nap, make a lovely
bit of french roast with the french press... 11:00 am - do I get a shower today?
Get lunch ready for hubby and myself ... 1:00 pm - run
afternoon errands, pick Hayley up from school, enjoy a bit of
fresh air ... 4:00 pm - dinner, house stuff... 6:00 pm - get everyone bathed and settled, bedtime
story, enjoy Ruby's wee bit of colic, tuck Hayley in at 8:00,
wind Ruby down hopefully by 7:00... 9:00 pm - process the day's orders, shipping,
inventory place orders, reply to non-emergent emails, stalk
the boards, work on the website with hubby... 11:00 pm - relax with hubby and,
if it is a weekend, a tiny glass of wine.
Q: What have you found to be the toughest part of the
job of WAHM?
I've always been a WAHM .... long before I had even heard of
the phrase. In the early 90's I lived on the Oregon
Coast and owned a little herbal business. I loved it!
My husband and I also tie dyed a bunch and sold to local
businesses and co-ops. We moved to Seattle and then
Eastern Washington and I grew my love of vintage clothing into
a business in the late 90's using Ebay and my own online
storefront. In my spare time I learned HTML and by '99
was working as a web designer. I built a lot of websites
and always wanted my own online store that wasn't dependent on
finding stuff in thrift shops! Sweet Bunz is made up of
all of my previous experience. The toughest part of
being a WAHM? The M! Mom is the toughest job ever
- working at home has always come naturally.
Q: What do you feel is your greatest
strength and the greatest asset that you
bring to your business?
Strength? Energy, excitement, genuine
passion for what I do... love of fabric and
craftsmanship. Greatest Asset?
My ability to juggle 3 things at once and
continually slurp on my latte...
Q: How would others
describe you?
Funky monkey! Artsy
Fartsy! Obsessive!
My friends call me Red - I
like that one! : )
Q:
On the
other
hand,
what do
you feel
is your
greatest
weakness
- how
have you
dealt
with
that in
your
business?
Weakness?
Interestingly
- a
desire
to
please.
Sometimes,
you just
can't
please
everyone.
Like the
husband
of a
cloth
diapering
mama who
emailed
me seven
times in
three
days
asking
me to
reduce
the
price on
one of
my items
to well
below
cost.
I really
wanted
to make
him a
happy
customer,
but knew
I
couldn't.
I
struggle
with
that
one.
Q: How would you describe yourself?
Happy...content...blessed.
Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
Meeting other moms...meeting moms that are just tinkering with
the idea of cloth...spreading the joy.
Q: What is your favorite other WAHM/WAHM sites?
I love Sugar Peas - just love it! I also love Fuzbaby.
Kiwi Pie - gorgeous! Lately I've participated in the
Friday SOS stalkings/stockings.
Q: What is your definition of a WAHM?
That's a tough one. I sometimes think WAHM is too
confining. A WAHM is crafty - not crafty with scissors
and glue (though maybe she is) but crafty with her time and
her energy and her mind and her skills. She's amazing.
She's whip smart. She's ahead of the curve. She's
ground-breaking.
Q: What is most important to you in a
Cloth Diaper Resource site?
Honest information...lots of it. I
read quickly, I absorb quickly and I always
want more. Keep it fresh.
