Diaper Folding 101 : "Let's do the Twist" Fold

The Twist Fold works great for both thin and chunky thighed babies.  With chunky-thighed babies, it gives them that extra room to wiggle.  It fits nicely under any Diaper Cover - as it brings the prefold higher up on the thigh.  It can be worn on thinner thighed babies as well and helps keep the diaper from hanging out the legs of the diaper cover.

You can add a micro-fleece liner to the stride of the prefold shown being folded below.  Fleece's ability to wick moisture from baby's privates to the absorbent diaper beneath keeps baby dry and rash free.

This diapering method requires a diaper cover of some sort.  Depending on the quality, age and wear and tear of the prefold, it can be highly absorbent.  However, prefolds are not an all-in-one diapering system, and therefore, are not water resistant or waterproof.  Diaper covers will protect your hip, lap, baby's clothing, etc. . . from getting wet!

Do not be mistaken that this fold only works well on girls.  Depending on 'placement' the Twist Fold can be a great option for mothers of boys as well.  In fact, the picture shown is our son a 4 month-old in a Twist Fold.

Step #1. Place baby on Chinese Prefold length-wise.

Step #2. Twisting bottom corners of prefold in criss-cross fashion.

Step #3. Fold up front twisted panel to baby's waist.

#1.  Lay your prefold out flat lengthwise under baby (with serged edges at top and bottom).

#2.  Twist the bottom serged edge of the prefold in a sort of criss-cross fashion.

If using a fleece liner, it needs to be placed  lengthwise down the center stride (over the twisted area) in order to wick moisture from baby once the diaper's front is pulled up over baby's stride.

If you are adding a diaper doubler for extra absorbency, place directly lengthwise beneath baby just as you would the fleece liner.  Unless thin and narrow, diaper doublers do not work well with this fold.

#3.  Draw the bottom serged edge of the prefold (keeping it twisted) up over the baby's stride/rise.

Step #4. Fold down top edge of Chinese Prefold at waist.

Step #5. Front panel covers baby's stride - wings left to wrap around.

Step #6. Wings wrap around to secure at sides.

#4.  Fold down the (now) top serged edge at the waist where it will fit comfortably and snuggly beneath a diaper cover.

This will also help to 'hold' the twisted portion in place.

#5.  Now that both baby's stride and bottom are 'covered' with this  twist-fold,  the wings are all that is left to wrap around the baby's left and right sides.  Wrap them snug, pulling up more to get a snugger fit on the thigh.

The front, folded-over portion will tuck  at baby's waist behind the back 'wings' that will wrap around and be secured as seen in Diagram #6.

If needed, tuck layers at the leg to ensure 'containment' of any messes.

#6.  Back wings wrap around baby and can be pinned with safety locking Diaper Pins through the front panel that was folded up, or as shown here, secured with a Snappi Fastener.

If pinning, do  not try to pin through all layers - catch one or two.

Keep fingers under diaper layers to ensure you DO NOT STICK baby!
