Diaper Folding 101 : Reverse Newspaper Fold
If you
like the newspaper fold, but would like a change of pace or the serged edges are
irritating your baby's stomach, try the Reverse Newspaper Fold.
For your heavy wetting babies, having a micro fleece
liner in
the stride of the prefold, allows the fleece to wick moisture from baby's
genitals and bum to the absorbent diaper beneath. These
attributes help keep baby dry and rash free.
This diapering
method requires a diaper cover of some sort. Depending on the
quality, age and wear and tear of your prefolds, they can be highly absorbent.
However, prefolds
are not an all-in-one diapering system, and therefore, are not water resistant
or waterproof. Diaper covers will protect your hip, lap, baby's clothing,
etc. . . from getting wet!

#1. Lay your prefold out flat lengthwise with serged edges at top and bottom
under baby.
|
#2. Fold in at an angle the bottom serged
edges of the prefold,
leaving the top edges (behind baby's lower back) open and unfolded.
The fleece liner,
if used, should lie
lengthwise down the center stride area (atop the fold) to wick moisture
away from baby.
If you are adding a diaper doubler for
extra absorbency, place directly lengthwise in the stride in the same
manner.
|
#3. Fold the folded front panel up to baby's waist - on a
newborn or smaller infant, it will be considerably higher than the
waistline.

#4.
You then fold the top serged edge back down until the
fold is appropriately at baby's waist for
securing the diaper.
The
side-folded panels that normally are tucked beneath (hidden) in a standard
Newspaper Fold are showing here folded a bit atop the other.
|
#5. Baby's stride and bottom will be 'covered' with this
folded-up panel, leaving the wings to wrap around the
baby's left and right sides.
If needed, the
tucked layers on the outside of the front panel can be pulled-out to the
left and right to 'meet up' with the wings coming around from the back
corners of the prefold behind baby.
Adjust
by letting out more for a 'buddha-bellied' baby.
This outside 'tuck' allows for a pretty expansive size variation.
|
#6. Wings wrap around baby and can be pinned
with safety locking
diaper pins or secured with a
Snappi Fastener
(as seen above) through the front panel
that was folded up.
When pinning: Do
not try to pin through all layers - catch one or two.
Keep fingers under diaper layers to ensure you DO
NOT STICK baby!
