Diaper Folding 101 : Newspaper Fold
Prefold Diaper Folds :: This diaper folding method
can be accomplished with any prefold diaper and will require a
diaper cover of some sort. Depending on the
quality, age and wear and tear of the prefold, it can be highly
absorbent. However, prefolds
are not an all-in-one diapering system, and therefore, are not water resistant
or waterproof. Diaper covers will protect your hip, lap,
baby's clothing, etc. . . from getting wet!
A Fleece Liner is used below. For your heavy wetting babies, having a micro fleece
liner in
the stride of the prefold,
allows the fleece to wick moisture from baby's genitals and bum to the absorbent
diaper beneath. These attributes help keep baby dry and rash free.

1. Lay your prefold out flat
vertically with serged
edges at top and bottom. The fleece liner, if used,
can lie across the center stride area before folding or
placed atop the entire fold after folding. At any rate,
the point is to wick moisture
from baby.
If you are adding a diaper doubler for extra absorbency,
place directly beneath the fleece liner.
|
2. Fold-up the bottom serged edge of
prefold
for desired length (may need to adjust according to baby's
rise) over the bottom edge of the fleece liner in this case
- usually about 1/4 of the length of the prefold.
|
3. Fold the left panel in 1/3 of the way,
crossing atop the middle panel of the prefold - this
creates a pocket in the bottom area that was initially folded-up
(as
you will see next).

4. Fold the right panel inwards 1/3 of the
way (as you did with the left panel) crossing atop the middle
panel of the prefold.
Then, tuck the bottom portion into the 'pocket' you will
have created with the bottom folded area. If you are
opting to place the fleece liner atop for full benefit (and
definitely needed for boys this way - lay it across at this
point before placing baby on diaper.)
(Look
to Diagram #3)
Place baby atop the prefold just above where the
outer panels 'wing-out' and pull the bottom folded panel up
and over baby as in the picture below.
|
5. Baby's stride and bottom will be 'covered'
with this folded-up panel, leaving the wings to wrap around
the baby's left and right sides.
If needed, the tucked layers on the front panel can be pulled-out
to adjust to a more 'buddha-bellied' baby.
This
'tuck' allows for a pretty expansive size variation.
|
6. Wings wrap around baby and can be
secured
with safety locking Diaper
Pins or a Snappi Fastener through the front panel that was folded up.
Do not try to pin through all layers - catch one or two.
Keep
fingers under diaper layers to ensure you
DO
NOT STICK baby!
This style fold can also be used within a wrap-style cover
where pins or snappi fasteners are not necessarily needed.

A note on using Fleece Liners in the Newspaper Fold.
The fold above folds the Fleece Liner deep
within the fold. This keeps it from sliding around, but also
keeps it from being present in the front area,
unless your baby is larger and there is less of a 'folded-down' area
up front. This fold is good for girls, because they soak more
readily to the back and stride than up front.
When folding a diaper for a boy, it is best to lay
the Fleece Liner atop the fold once you get to Diagram #4.
This assures that the fleece is at the front where it is needed to
wick moisture away. If your child is large enough to where you
do not need to fold over any of the prefold in the front area, this
same 'tucked-in' technique of Fleece Liners can be utilized and
keep baby dry.
