Miniature Cloth Diaper Advocacy.
Though the little miniature fitted diapers
and wool soakers are perfectly sewn and knitted - snaps
and ties even . . . their extended purpose is for the
promotion of cloth diapering. They are a 'tool' for
cloth diaper advocacy as they not only 'look' like the
real thing, but are perfect examples of real life
diapering products..
Aherne, maker of the cloth diaper key
chains is a cloth diapering advocate who has always
known she was going to use cloth diapers. Her first
set of cloth diapers was purchased at the age of 14 (for
her hopechest) and
several years later, identifying with every "...mom on a
tight budget, [she] couldn't imagine the cost involved in
diapering two children in disposables." Her
miniatures help her to spread that word to others that
inevitably see her key chain and dare to ask. With
their mini-matching soakers and snap or velcro closure
wings, they aren't a far cry from the real thing.
Shortly after the birth of her son, Aherne went from
taking a few orders here and there from her friends to
starting a business.
Knickernappies affords her family income the
supplimentation it needs for her to stay home and care
after her children.
Marnie, the creator of the adorable
wool soaker key chains (she made Christmas ornaments
as well), is a die-hard advocate of cloth as well.
She places flyers in her local WIC office and doctor's
office promoting natural family practices, and tries to
always have a cute fitted and a snappi fastener on hand
"to show how things have changed." She has since
grown to love knitting wool soakers. These little
miniatures, she says, "...are fun and easy to make and a
great ice breaker." The key chain soakers actually
can tie secure at the waist and allow for others to 'feel'
of the wool. Her WAHM experience has led her to
local advocacy where she has been asked by her local
health food store to stock a baby section of cloth
diapering supplies and natural baby products. She
will be making wool soakers, soaker pants, cloth diapers
and slings. As well she teaches attachment parenting
classes at the local community education center.
